Itinerary of Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek - 6 days

Day 01

Drive to Pokhara (860m) – 6 hours, 220 km / 137 miles

The adventure begins with a scenic overland drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, covering approximately 220 kilometers in about six hours. The road winds alongside the Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers, passing terraced hillsides, rural villages, and shifting landscapes as you leave the Kathmandu Valley behind. Arriving in Pokhara at 860m, you'll check into your hotel with time to relax by Phewa Lake, enjoy the lakeside cafes, and take in views of the Annapurna range from the city itself. This day also serves as a buffer for final trek preparation, gear checks, and briefing with your Nepal Adventure Holidays guide before heading into the mountains.

  1. Max. Elevation:860 m
  2. Duration:6-7 Hours
  3. Distance:220 km
Day 02

Jeep Drive to Jhinu Danda and Trek to Sinuwa (2,340m | 7,677ft) – 6 hours

An early jeep drive takes you from Pokhara toward Jhinu Danda, following rugged mountain roads that shave off the lower, less scenic trekking days and get you straight into the heart of the Annapurna foothills. From Jhinu Danda, the trail climbs through forested ridgelines and traditional Gurung villages, offering early glimpses of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli. After roughly six hours of combined driving and trekking, you'll arrive at Sinuwa, a small settlement perched on a ridge that serves as the gateway into the Modi Khola valley and the Annapurna Sanctuary beyond.

  1. Max. Elevation:2,340 m
  2. Duration:5-6 Hours
Day 03

Trek to Deurali (3,230m | 10,597ft) – 4 hours

From Sinuwa, the trail drops briefly before climbing steadily through dense bamboo, rhododendron, and oak forests as you enter the narrowing Modi Khola gorge. Passing through Bamboo and Himalaya, the vegetation gradually thins as altitude increases, giving way to more open, dramatic terrain. After about four hours of trekking, you arrive at Deurali, where the surrounding peaks begin to close in and the sense of entering a high mountain sanctuary becomes unmistakable. This shorter trekking day also supports gradual acclimatization ahead of the push to higher elevations.

  1. Max. Elevation:3,230 m
  2. Duration:4-5 Hours
Day 04

Trek to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) via Machhapuchare Base Camp (3,720m) – 6 hours

Today is the highlight of the trek. Leaving Deurali, the trail continues through glacial moraine and increasingly stark alpine scenery to reach Machhapuchare Base Camp (MBC), where the iconic Fishtail peak looms directly overhead. From MBC, the final stretch to Annapurna Base Camp opens into a vast natural amphitheater surrounded by Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and Machapuchare. Arriving at ABC (4,130m) after roughly six hours of trekking, you're rewarded with one of the most spectacular 360-degree mountain panoramas in the Himalayas, especially striking at sunrise and sunset.

  1. Max. Elevation:4,130 m
  2. Duration:5-6 Hours
Day 05

Trek Back to Bamboo (2,310m | 7,578ft) – 6 hours

After soaking in the sunrise views over Annapurna Base Camp, the descent begins. Retracing your steps through MBC and Deurali, the trail drops steadily back into the forested lower sanctuary, with oxygen levels and temperatures both improving noticeably as you lose elevation. The descent through bamboo and rhododendron forest is scenic and comparatively gentle, and after around six hours of walking, you arrive at Bamboo for an overnight stay, with the toughest part of the trek now behind you.

  1. Max. Elevation:2,310 m
  2. Duration:6-7 Hours
Day 06

Trek to Jhinu Danda (1,700m) and Drive Back to Pokhara – 6 hours

The final trekking day takes you back down through Sinuwa and Chhomrong before descending to Jhinu Danda, well known for its natural hot springs on the banks of the Modi Khola river. This is the perfect place to relax tired legs before continuing your journey. From Jhinu Danda, a jeep will drive you back to Pokhara, marking the end of the 6 Days Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Essential Information

Transportation for Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Our Annapurna Base Camp 6 Days trek starts by pick up by private vehicle from Kathmandu to Pokhara (6 hours ride approx 220km). We then drive for about 3 hours from Pokhara to reach to Jhinu Danda via jeep where we start our trek which will take us direct to high mountain and Annapurna Base Camp leaving the initial and less scenic trekking days behind. The jeep drive will take us back to Pokhara after the trek.

The road of jeep drive from Jhinu to Pokhara is not always very smooth, especially if the trek is conducted during or just after the rainy season.

You can also opt for a helicopter ride between Pokhara to Annapurna Sanctuary on an additional payment basis.

Food During the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek

We have meals on trail. There are tea houses in each settlement of the trekking like Sinuwa, Deurali, MBC, ABC on trail. Mostly, they offer common food menu like dal bhat (rice, lentil, and vegetable), noodles, pasta, soup and some basic breakfast like soup, porridge, bread, omelet, etc.

Options of vegetarian and vegan are available at all tea houses.

I recommend having dal bhat because they are filling and give a lot of energy for trekking. You can either buy bottled drinking water or get boiled/filter water refilled.

Accommodation for Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek

For most of the trek, accommodation is in the humble but cozy tea houses; rooms often comprise of two beds shared with a fellow trekkers. At lower altitudes like Jhinu Danda, Sinuwa etc there will be mostly common bathrooms and facilities will be relatively better.

However as we move upwards to Deurali, MBC and towards ABC the rooms get really basic, bathrooms are common and if hot water is available it comes at a price and a meager space; communal dinning area often doubles up as lounge for trekkers to relax in the evenings.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek Permits

Two permits are required for this trek, both of which are arranged by Nepal Adventure Holidays as part of the package.

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) – required to enter the conservation area

  • TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System) – used to track and ensure trekker safety

  • Permit checkpoints are located along the route, including near the entrance to the sanctuary

  • Permits can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara through a registered trekking agency

Annapurna Base Camp Trek Difficulty

Moderate difficulty (but very tightly scheduled) A bit of each as the day’s hiking time will vary from 4-6 hours. We’re hiking across some stone steps, forest tracks and glacial moraine where sustained fitness will be a must.

Since we’re hiking to Annapurna Base camp in just 4 days, you should be fit enough for regular hiking / walking.

Acclimatization on the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek

This itinerary particularly places strong emphasis on acclimatization due to a packed itinerary. With a moderate climb in altitude up to Deurali from Sinuwa, and trekkers being accompanied at a steady pace by experienced trek leaders at Nepal Adventure Holidays, it encourages the body to adjust smoothly with elevation changes. Deurali and MBC acts as major stopping points for acclimatization where guides check for any symptoms before further progress towards ABC.

Acclimatization on the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Given the compressed schedule, acclimatization is especially important on this itinerary. The gradual elevation gain from Sinuwa to Deurali, and the guided pacing set by experienced Nepal Adventure Holidays trekking staff, help the body adjust naturally to increasing altitude. Deurali and MBC serve as key acclimatization checkpoints, and guides monitor trekkers closely for any early signs of altitude discomfort before continuing higher toward Annapurna Base Camp.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek Altitude Sickness

Because Annapurna Base Camp sits at 4,130m and this itinerary ascends relatively quickly, understanding altitude sickness is essential.

Common symptoms:

  • Headache and dizziness

  • Nausea or loss of appetite

  • Fatigue and shortness of breath

  • Difficulty sleeping

Prevention strategies:

  • Walk at a slow, steady pace

  • Stay well hydrated throughout the day

  • Avoid alcohol and heavy meals at high altitude

  • Communicate any discomfort to your guide immediately

Immediate actions if symptoms appear:

  • Inform your guide right away

  • Rest and avoid further ascent until symptoms improve

    A Full Day of Exploration

This tour covers a lot in one day, so be prepared for some walking! The guide was patient and answered all our questions. The only minor issue was the midday heat, but the company provided water, which helped. Overall, a great way to see Kathmandu’s UNESCO treasures in a short time.
