Trip Overview

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

One of the finest treks in Nepal's Annapurna region is the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. Operated by Nepal Adventure Holidays and assisted by well experienced local trekking guides the 10 day package is especially designed to experience the Annapurna & Dhaulagiri massifs without indulging in a longer trekking itinerary. From terraces in the highlands above Pokhara to rhododendron strewn ranges at Ghorepani, every segment of your walk has its special charms for the virgin as well as veteran trekkers.

This 10 day itinerary starts from Kathmandu and also ends at Kathmandu.

The 5-day trek itself is about 65 to 70 km with the walking journey commencing and terminating at Nayapul – a place readily connected to Pokhara by motor. You gradually march up the subtropical lower foothills via the vibrant rhododendron and oak vegetation and arrive at the remarkable viewpoint of Poon Hill (3,210m). The trail through Tikhedhunga, Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani and on to the wonderful Gurung settlement of Ghandruk offers a breathtaking collection of sights and sounds – an ultimate trekking dream. Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is the highlight to experience several outstanding elements and facets.

The ethnic villages inhabited by the Magar and Gurung peoples at Ghorepani and Ghandruk respectively, offer a welcoming environment with their unique cultural practices and customs.

As you proceed, you cross through the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP), the protected region where unique flora and fauna (including the national flower of Nepal – Red Rhododendron) thrive. The sight of Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South (7,219m), Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Hiunchuli and the unmistakable fishtail shaped peak Machhapuchhre (6,993m) emerging dramatically over the horizon at sunrise from the Poon Hill viewpoint is indeed an unforgettable spectacle. Additionally, the trek ventures into the quaint Gurung village of Ghandruk which is one of the largest of its kind in Nepal with an antique setting in a serene environment overlooking the mighty peaks.

There are two best seasons for Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. The spring, between the months of March and May is the time when you can see the whole region bedecked with red and pink rhododendrons covering the hillsides in splendor- truly a fantastic experience! September to November offers clear blue skies and outstanding mountain views in dry conditions.

The grade of this trekking is Moderate so it can be done by any fit trekker even having little knowledge about high altitude trekking, walking about 5-7 hours per day.

Book your Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with Nepal Adventure Holidays and let our knowledgeable guides provide a trek of lifetime.

Drive to Nayapul & Trek to Tikhedhunga (1,500m)

The trekking adventure officially begins on Day 4. After an early breakfast at your hotel, Nepal Adventure Holidays' vehicle will transfer you from Pokhara to Nayapul, a drive of approximately one and a half hours along a scenic road that winds through the Modi Khola valley. Nayapul is the established trailhead for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, and you will complete all permit checks here with your ACAP and TIMS cards. The trail begins by crossing a suspension bridge over the Modi Khola river and then following a relatively gentle path through small villages, terraced farmland, and subtropical vegetation. After a short walk, you will reach the village of Birethanti, where the trail officially enters the Annapurna Conservation Area. The trail then continues through Hile before ascending more steadily to reach Tikhedhunga, a charming village that sits beside a waterfall and marks the end of your first trekking day. The approximately four to five hours of walking today makes for a gentle warm-up for the trail ahead. Overnight at a teahouse in Tikhedhunga.

  2. Duration:3-4 hours
Day 05

Trek from Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani (2,875m)

Today is the most challenging day of the trek, but also one of the most rewarding. The morning begins with an ascent of the famous stone staircase from Tikhedhunga up to Ulleri — nearly 3,000 steps that climb steeply through terraced farmland and rhododendron forest. The effort is significant, but the views that open up as you gain elevation are absolutely spectacular, with early glimpses of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli appearing above the ridgeline. From Ulleri, the trail moderates as it winds through beautiful oak and rhododendron forests that come alive with colour in the spring. After passing through Banthanti and Nangethanti, the trail continues to climb steadily through increasingly dense forest before emerging into the open alpine meadows near Ghorepani. This pleasant hilltop village sits at 2,875 metres and offers magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The walking time for today is approximately six to seven hours. Overnight at a teahouse in Ghorepani.

  1. Max. Elevation:2,875 m
  2. Duration:5-6 Hours
Day 06

Poon Hill Sunrise & Trek to Tadapani (2,630m)

This is the most iconic day of the entire trek. Wake before dawn — your guide will lead a pre-dawn hike of approximately 45 minutes to one hour up to Poon Hill (3,210m). As the first light of the morning touches the summits, the entire Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges are set ablaze in shades of orange and gold — one of the most celebrated mountain sunrise experiences anywhere in the world. On a clear morning, you can see Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South (7,219m), Hiunchuli, Machapuchare (Fishtail), and dozens of other peaks stretching across the entire horizon. After spending time absorbing this breathtaking panorama and taking photographs, you descend back to Ghorepani for a hearty breakfast. The day's trek then continues eastward through the forest towards Tadapani, crossing the forested ridge with frequent views of Machapuchare. The trail undulates through rhododendron and magnolia forests, passing through Deurali before descending to Tadapani. Approximately six hours of walking. Overnight at a teahouse in Tadapani.

  1. Max. Elevation:2,630 m
  2. Duration:6-7 Hours
Day 07

Trek from Tadapani to Ghandruk (1,940m)

Today's stage brings you to one of the most celebrated villages in the Annapurna region — Ghandruk. The trail descends from Tadapani through beautiful rhododendron and bamboo forests, with wonderful views of Machapuchare, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli accompanying you for much of the walk. The path winds steeply down before arriving at the stone-paved lanes and traditional stone houses of Ghandruk, the largest Gurung village in the Annapurna Conservation Area. Ghandruk is a treasure trove of Gurung culture and heritage, and you are encouraged to explore the village at leisure — visit the small but fascinating Gurung Museum, wander through the narrow stone alleys, and engage with the warm and welcoming locals. The village also has a strong trekking infrastructure, with excellent teahouses and rest areas overlooking the Annapurna range. At this altitude of 1,940 metres, the air is warm and comfortable, making it a perfect place to wind down after the high-altitude days. Approximately four to five hours of walking. Overnight at a teahouse in Ghandruk.

Day 08

Trek to Nayapul & Drive back to Pokhara

The final trekking day arrives, and with it comes a satisfying sense of accomplishment. The trail descends from Ghandruk through terraced fields and river valleys, following the Modi Khola downstream back toward Nayapul. The path passes through smaller villages and crosses several suspension bridges, offering a gentle and scenic conclusion to the trail. By mid-morning or early afternoon, you will arrive back at Nayapul to find Nepal Adventure Holidays' vehicle waiting to transfer you back to Pokhara. Once back in the lakeside city, celebrate the successful completion of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with your guide and fellow trekkers. The afternoon and evening are free to enjoy Pokhara's cafes, restaurants, and lakeside ambience. You might take a boat ride on Phewa Lake, visit the World Peace Pagoda, or simply relax with a well-earned meal. Overnight at a 3-star hotel in Pokhara.

All transportation as per your itinerary is included in your package deal which will allow you to have a comfortable and hassle free ride at all the points. You will be transported from Kathmandu to Pokhara by a private vehicle through the well connected Prithvi Highway that stretches along the river valleys of Nepal mid-hills passing through market towns and towns. The total drive takes about six to seven hours which presents you with a great view of the changing landscapes of the Nepalese mid-hills.

Or you can go for an upgrade and opt for a flight from Kathmandu International Airport (KAO) to Pokhara (PKR).

The flight usually takes about twenty five minutes and gives you a bird’s eye view of the towering Annapurna and Manaslu Himalayan ranges. However, domestic flights in Nepal are generally susceptible to delays due to weather conditions especially during monsoons; so factor that in when dealing with tight schedules. From Pokhara your journey to the trekking starting point of Nayapul the trek head to the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek starts in a vehicle which you will reach within a period of about an hour and half. Your route to Nayapul passes through the valleys of Seti Gandaki and Modi Khola with stops at some of the charming small towns like Lumle and Chandrakot.

Your Trek officially starts at Nayapul where you will begin trekking on foot.

The vehicle for your journey back to Pokhara on day 8 is waiting at Nayapul, to take you to Pokhara again.

Food During the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Food On The Trail One of the things that can be a unique and real pleasure of the Nepal journey is the food culture on the trail. You will eat three meals a day from day four to day eight, which consist of Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Before and after the trek, breakfasts are included at your 3 star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara, Lunch and Dinner are not included in your package which offer you opportunities to explore both Kathmandu, especially Thamel and the lakeside region of Pokhara to experience the wide selection of local food available.

Food at teahouses on the trail to Ghorepani Poon Hill There are plenty of food options to suit all tastes, including the classic Dal Bhat.

Nepal's most popular meal is Dal Bhat; made of rice, lentil soup, mixed vegetables with some greens is always available at teahouses with free refills. Also popular are such trekking meals like noodle soup, fried rice, pasta dishes, rice and lentil, porridge, pancake, mo-mo dumplings and other egg dishes. You will find that vegetarian and vegan food is widely available on the entire route. The most convenient drinking water option on the trail is purified, boiled, or bottled water, and we suggest boiled or filtered water along with water purification tablets.

Accommodation on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Accommodation Nepal Adventure Holidays offer nice 3-star comfortable hotels in Kathmandu (3 nights), Pokhara (2 nights) all rooms on twin sharing basis with breakfast. Our hotels have been chosen for their convenient location, cleanliness and facilities such as hot showers, wi-fi & own restaurants. At The Treks: Days 4 to 7 of the trip we will be staying in teahouses.

The teahouses are locally owned and operated guesthouses; they form the infrastructure of most treks in the Annapurna region.

Accommodation is relatively simple with twin bed(s) with blankets usually. Hotels at low altitudes along the route (Tikhedhunga, Tadapani & Ghandruk) often include a private shower and/or bathroom at the hotel. At higher altitude towards Ghorepani rooms are even simpler. Squat toilets are normally standard though an attached hot shower may sometimes be provided at an additional cost.

Recharging your phone or camera battery should be possible for an extra charge per device.

We always arrange booking of the best available teahouse in the area.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek Permits

Two permits are required to undertake the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, both of which are included in your Nepal Adventure Holidays package:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) – This permit is issued by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) and is required for entry into the Annapurna Conservation Area. It contributes directly to the conservation and management of Nepal's largest protected area.

  • TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System) – Issued by the Nepal Tourism Board and the Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN), the TIMS card is a mandatory safety and tracking document for all trekkers in Nepal.

  • Both permits can be obtained in Kathmandu (at the Nepal Tourism Board office) or in Pokhara (at the TAAN office near Lakeside). Nepal Adventure Holidays handles this process on your behalf.

Permit checking points are located at Nayapul (the trailhead) and at several points along the route, including Birethanti, Tikhedhunga, Ghorepani, and Ghandruk. Trekkers must carry both permits at all times on the trail.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek Difficulty

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek has been rated as ‘moderate’ and is considered the easiest multi-day trekking option in the Annapurnas. It’s appropriate for people of a reasonable fitness level, even first-timers who want to go trekking in the Himalayas, though it still involves a fair bit of trekking each day and is best suited for physically fit people. No technical mountaineering ability is required to complete this trail and the highest point of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek - Poon Hill (3,210m) - is well within the realm of altitude illness prevention, assuming good paced and hydration strategies.

Each day will typically involve between 4-7 hours of trekking each day with day 5 from Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani being the most difficult day, where the trail features a sustained uphill slope of stone steps. Terrain varies from stone village paths, well trodden mountain tracks, to earthy forest floor trails. The stone stairway of over 3,000 steps between Tikhedhunga to Ulleri is considered the most arduous part of the trip and can be trying for those that are not used to sustained uphill climbs. The trail is, however, well-maintained, well-sign posted and fairly crowded with other people walking the trek, ensuring a sociable experience. Nepal Adventure Holidays suggest that participants build some cardio and leg strength over a 4-6 week period leading up to the trek, in order to make the most of this trip.

Acclimatization on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

While the highest elevation on the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is just 3,210 metres at Poon Hill, which is not as high as Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit treks, getting acclimatised to altitude and pacing yourself are still key. Altitude gain takes time and the human body can only tolerate reduced oxygen levels so much before it starts suffering from symptoms such as headache, nausea and lethargy. The 10 day itinerary put together by Nepal Adventure Holidays is, thus, formulated so you get an opportunity to ascend gradually, with each night at a slightly higher altitude so that your body gradually starts acclimatising itself to the thinning air in Nepal.

The ascent goes up to 1070 metres at Nayapul, to 1500 meters at Tikhedhunga and to 2875 metres in Ghorepani within two days, after which one gets to witness the best view from 3210 metres at Poon Hill at the break of the day and then comes back, instead of camping there. Then one goes up to 2050 metres at Tadapani and 2700 metres at Ghandruk after which the route to trek falls to the lowest altitudes in the region and the body continues to get acclimatised at these moderate altitudes as well. Remember to drink a minimum of three to four liters of water throughout the day and that while at altitude one must abstain from sleeping pills and alcohol; one has to walk slowly at a comfortable pace and inform your guide promptly at the first sign of any altitude related trouble.

Altitude Sickness on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Altitude sickness, or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), can occur at elevations above 2,500 metres, though the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek's maximum altitude of 3,210 metres means the risk is relatively low compared to higher altitude treks in Nepal. Nevertheless, trekkers should be aware of the symptoms and know how to respond. Nepal Adventure Holidays' guides are trained in first aid and altitude sickness management, and your safety is always the top priority.

Common symptoms of AMS include:

  • Headache, particularly a persistent or worsening one

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Fatigue or general weakness beyond normal trekking tiredness

  • Loss of appetite

  • Difficulty sleeping

Prevention strategies include:

  • Ascend gradually and follow the itinerary without rushing

  • Stay well hydrated — drink at least 3–4 litres of water per day

  • Avoid alcohol, sleeping pills, and sedatives at altitude

  • Eat nutritious meals even if your appetite is reduced

  • Communicate openly with your guide if you feel unwell

If symptoms appear, the first and most important action is to stop ascending and rest at the current altitude. If symptoms worsen or do not improve within 24 hours, descent to a lower altitude is mandatory. Your Nepal Adventure Holidays guide will make this call in the interest of your safety. Diamox (acetazolamide) can help prevent AMS and may be used after consulting with a physician before the trek.

Adequate physical and mental preparation ensures that you get the most out of your Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek experience with Nepal Adventure Holidays. Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek FAQs

How difficult is the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek?

The trek is rated as moderate. It is suitable for reasonably fit beginners with no prior trekking experience in Nepal, but the steep stone staircase from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri on Day 5 can be challenging. With proper preparation, a good pace, and an experienced guide from Nepal Adventure Holidays, most trekkers complete it comfortably.

What is the best season for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek?

The best seasons are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). Spring offers the spectacular sight of rhododendron forests in full bloom. Autumn delivers the clearest mountain views with stable weather. Both seasons are excellent. Winter (December to February) is possible with warm clothing, while summer monsoon (June to August) brings heavy rain and leeches, making the trail slippery and views limited.

Is there Wi-Fi and mobile network coverage on the trail?

Wi-Fi is available at most teahouses along the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek route, though speeds are generally slow and a small charge may apply. Ncell and Nepal Telecom SIM cards provide reasonable 4G or 3G coverage at Ghandruk and Ghorepani but may drop to 2G or no signal in forested sections. Download offline maps before you start.

Are there charging facilities on the trek?

Yes, most teahouses on the route offer charging facilities for phones, cameras, and portable devices, usually for a fee of NPR 100–300 per charge. Nepal Adventure Holidays recommends carrying a portable power bank as a backup, especially for the pre-dawn hike to Poon Hill where camera batteries drain faster in cold temperatures.

What is the risk of altitude sickness on this trek?

The maximum altitude on this trek is 3,210m at Poon Hill, which is relatively modest. Altitude sickness is possible but uncommon if trekkers pace themselves, stay hydrated, and follow their guide's advice. Nepal Adventure Holidays' guides are trained to recognise and respond to AMS symptoms, and descent to lower altitude is always the primary response if symptoms worsen.

Is a guide mandatory or optional in the Annapurna Conservation Area?

As of the regulations in Nepal, trekkers are strongly encouraged to hire a licensed guide in the ACAP region for safety and navigation. Nepal Adventure Holidays includes a professional licensed guide in all packages. Beyond safety, your guide enriches the experience with cultural context, local knowledge, and language support throughout the journey.

How much does the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek cost with Nepal Adventure Holidays?

The package cost varies based on group size, season, and any optional upgrades (such as Kathmandu to Pokhara flights). Please contact Nepal Adventure Holidays directly for the most current pricing. The package includes all accommodation, meals on the trek, permits, guide, porter, and transportation as listed in the inclusions section above.

Can I trek solo on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek?

While independent trekking in the Annapurna region is technically permitted, Nepal Adventure Holidays strongly recommends trekking with a professional guide, especially for first-time visitors to Nepal. The trail is well-marked but can be confusing at junctions, and having a knowledgeable guide adds significant value in terms of safety, cultural understanding, and overall experience.

What permits are required for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek?

Two permits are required: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card. Both are included in your Nepal Adventure Holidays package and are arranged on your behalf before the trek begins.

What is the food quality like on the trek?

Teahouse food on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is wholesome and satisfying. Dal Bhat is the staple — a hearty, nutritious meal of rice, lentil soup, and vegetables served with unlimited refills. Most teahouses also offer noodles, pasta, fried rice, soup, eggs, porridge, and pancakes. Vegetarian and vegan options are readily available. Water quality can vary, so Nepal Adventure Holidays recommends boiled or filtered water.

What fitness level is required for this trek?

A moderate level of fitness is required. Trekkers should be able to walk 5–7 hours per day over varying terrain including steep uphill sections. It is recommended to begin a training routine of regular walking, stair climbing, and cardio exercise at least four to six weeks before your departure date.

Are there hot springs near the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek route?

The famous natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda are located near the lower section of the Ghorepani Poon Hill route, close to Ghandruk. While not included as a dedicated stop in this 10-day itinerary, trekkers who have time and energy may ask their guide about a brief detour to enjoy these therapeutic thermal pools after the main trekking days. It is a wonderful way to soothe tired muscles.

How is this trek different from the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is shorter (5 trekking days vs. 7–9 days), lower in altitude (3,210m vs. 4,130m), and generally less demanding than the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Poon Hill offers a celebrated viewpoint over multiple high peaks, while Annapurna Base Camp places you inside a glacial amphitheater surrounded by 8,000m summits. Both are exceptional treks — Poon Hill is ideal for shorter trips and first-time trekkers, while ABC suits those seeking a more immersive and challenging high-altitude experience.

What should I expect on the pre-dawn Poon Hill hike?

The hike from Ghorepani to Poon Hill begins at around 4:30 to 5:00 AM and takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour on a well-marked path through rhododendron forest. It is cold at this hour, so dress warmly in layers. Carry your headlamp (essential), camera, and a warm drink in a flask if possible. The sunrise, when it arrives above the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, is one of the most magnificent natural spectacles in all of Nepal.

    A Full Day of Exploration

This tour covers a lot in one day, so be prepared for some walking! The guide was patient and answered all our questions. The only minor issue was the midday heat, but the company provided water, which helped. Overall, a great way to see Kathmandu’s UNESCO treasures in a short time.
