Annapurna Circuit Trek

  • 53 reviewson TripAdvisor
The Annapurna Circuit Trek is an 18-day Himalayan journey that combines one of the world's most diverse long-distance trekking routes with the dramatic high-altitude detour to Tilicho Lake. Beginning in Kathmandu, the package moves through Besisahar, Chame, Upper Pisang, Ngawal, and Manang before climbing to Tilicho Base Camp and Tilicho Lake (4,919m), then rejoining the main circuit to cross Thorong La Pass (5,416m) and descend into Muktinath. The trek showcases the full range of the Annapurna region's character — subtropical river valleys, Gurung and Manangi villages, alpine pasture, and high-desert Mustang terrain — alongside close-range views of Annapurna I, II, III, IV, Gangapurna, and Machapuchare. Rated moderate to challenging, the route is built around a carefully staged acclimatization profile, with a dedicated rest day in Manang and gradual elevation gain throughout. This package, organised by Nepal Adventure Holidays, includes private jeep transfers, tea house accommodation with full board during trekking, an experienced English-speaking guide, ACAP and TIMS permits, and 4-star hotel stays in Kathmandu and Pokhara — providing a complete, safety-focused framework for one of the Himalayas' most rewarding adventures.

Trip Overview

Annapurna Circuit Trek

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is arguably one of the world's greatest long-distance treks through Nepal's fabulous Annapurna Himalayan region. This legendary trek winds its way from verdant sub-tropical valleys and ancient temples of Hindus and Buddhists to bare high-altitude plains and ice-covered giant mountains. Nepal Adventure Holidays provides an 18 day all inclusive Annapurna Circuit Trek, skillfully designed to provide an excellent balance between adventure, culture and spectacular mountain scenery. Whether you are an experienced trekker or undertaking your first trek in the Himalayas, this is one trek that will remain etched in your memory forever.

Our 18-day Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary starts in Kathmandu and goes on a sweeping loop through some of Nepal’s most exciting landscapes. A trek covering approximately 160-180kms with an average altitude of around 3,000m and the highest point at a colossal 5,416m at the famously notorious Thorong La Pass (the highest trekking pass in the world) one of the highlights. Trek from Besisahar (760m) to Muktinath (3,760m) before heading back to Pokhara and Kathmandu. Our trek also stops in Chame, Pisang, Manang, Lake Tilicho and holy Muktinath – a route rich in diversity which few Himalayan treks can boast.

This route is made spectacular with a visit to Tilicho Lake (4,919m), the highest in the world and revered by both trekkers and pilgrims, and close-up views of Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Gangapurna and fishtail (Machapuchare) peaks. You will also pass through traditional villages of the Gurungs, Manangi and Thakali peoples who maintain their ancient customs and cultures. The Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP), the protected region where the whole trek takes place, is habitat for numerous wild animals including, if you are lucky, snow leopards and blue sheep as well as rhododendron forests in bloom in the spring.

The best time for an Annapurna Circuit Trek is during the spring season (March to May) and autumn season (September to November) when there is warm temperatures, clear skies and blossoms in the rhododendron forests and cultural festivals. High altitude routes can be difficult to travel at certain times of year: the summer months can bring torrential rains which makes paths extremely slick and dangerous while the winter months bring frigid conditions and potential snow at the higher altitudes around Thorong La Pass. Moderate to challenging difficulty, the Annapurna Circuit requires a good level of fitness. Itinerary of Annapurna Circuit Trek - 18 days

Day 01

Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m / 4,344ft)

Your Annapurna Circuit Trek adventure begins the moment you land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. A representative from Nepal Adventure Holidays will be waiting to greet you and transfer you comfortably in a private air-conditioned vehicle to your hotel — the 4-star Mulberry Hotel or similar. After checking in and freshening up, your guide will conduct a thorough trek briefing, covering the full itinerary, permits, packing essentials, and safety guidelines. The rest of the day is yours to relax, explore the vibrant streets around Thamel, or visit a nearby monastery. A good night's sleep in Kathmandu helps you prepare for the adventure ahead.

  1. Max. Elevation:1,400
Day 02

Kathmandu Heritage Sightseeing Tour

Today, an experienced English-speaking city guide takes you on a curated tour of Kathmandu's UNESCO World Heritage Sites — a perfect cultural introduction before you enter the mountains. The day typically includes visits to Pashupatinath Temple, Nepal's most sacred Hindu temple set along the banks of the Bagmati River; Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world; Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), perched on a hilltop offering sweeping valley views; and Kathmandu Durbar Square, a historic complex of royal palaces, courtyards, and intricate Newari architecture. The cultural richness of Kathmandu gives valuable context to the communities you will encounter along the trekking trail. The evening is free for last-minute gear shopping in Thamel.

  1. Max. Elevation:1,400 m
  2. Duration:7-9 Hours
Day 03

Drive Kathmandu to Besisahar (760m / 2,493ft) by Private Jeep — 6 to 7 Hours

Departing early from Kathmandu, you embark on a scenic jeep drive that takes you westward along the Prithvi Highway, following the Trishuli and Marsyangdi river valleys toward Besisahar — the official starting point of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. The drive takes approximately 6 to 7 hours and passes through rolling green hills, terraced farmland, and traditional Gurung and Magar villages. Besisahar, the headquarters of Lamjung District, is a bustling town where you will check your trekking permits and make any final preparations. Arriving in the late afternoon, you settle into your tea house accommodation for the night, with the excitement of the trail beginning tomorrow.

  1. Max. Elevation:760 m
  2. Duration:5-6 Hours
Day 04

Drive Besisahar to Chame (2,710m / 8,891ft) by Private Jeep — 5 to 6 Hours

From Besisahar, your private jeep carries you further up the Marsyangdi Valley through a series of increasingly dramatic landscapes. The road winds past roaring rivers, hanging bridges, terraced fields, and small ethnic villages as you gain altitude steadily. The drive passes through Bhulbhule, Ngadi, Bahundanda, Syange, Jagat, Dharapani, and Chame — the administrative headquarters of Manang District. As you ascend, the scenery shifts noticeably, with pine forests and rocky mountain walls beginning to dominate the horizon. Chame sits at 2,710m and offers the first truly alpine feel of the journey. After checking into your tea house, take a gentle evening stroll through the village.

  1. Max. Elevation:2,710 m
  2. Duration:5-6 Hours
Day 05

Trek from Chame to Upper Pisang (3,300m / 10,827ft) — 5 to 6 Hours

Today the trekking truly begins in earnest. The trail from Chame climbs steadily through dense pine and apple orchid forests along the banks of the Marsyangdi River, with the towering walls of Paungda Danda — a massive curved rock face — making for a striking natural spectacle. As you approach Pisang, the landscape opens dramatically and you are greeted with your first commanding view of Annapurna II (7,937m) rising in magnificent clarity ahead of you. Upper Pisang sits on a ridge above the main trail and rewards trekkers with superior mountain views and a traditional atmosphere, with ancient mani walls and a hilltop monastery that is well worth the short climb. The air is noticeably thinner here — a gentle reminder to keep your pace steady.

  1. Max. Elevation:3,300 m
  2. Duration:5-6 Hours
Day 06

Trek from Upper Pisang to Ngawal (3,660m / 12,008ft) — 5 to 7 Hours

Choosing the high trail from Upper Pisang, today's route takes you through some of the most visually spectacular terrain on the entire Annapurna Circuit Trek. The path traverses the upper ridgeline of the Marsyangdi Valley, passing through the traditional village of Ghyaru before continuing to Ngawal — both perched on high ridges with jaw-dropping panoramas of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Gangapurna, and the Pisang Peak (6,091m). The villages here are inhabited by the Manangi people and retain a distinctly Tibetan character, with whitewashed stone houses, prayer flags, and gompas (monasteries) dotting the landscape. The walk is long and exposed in places but the views more than compensate for the effort.

  1. Max. Elevation:3,660 m
  2. Duration:5-6 Hours
Day 07

Trek from Ngawal to Manang (3,540m / 11,614ft) — 4 to 5 Hours

Descending gently from Ngawal, the trail passes through the picturesque village of Braga — one of the oldest and most atmospheric settlements on the Annapurna Circuit. Braga's ancient monastery, believed to be over 500 years old and housing dozens of clay statues, is a cultural highlight not to be missed. From Braga, it is a short and scenic walk to Manang, the largest and most important village in the upper Marsyangdi Valley. Sitting at 3,540m, Manang serves as the primary acclimatization hub on the Annapurna Circuit Trek. It offers a surprisingly wide range of tea houses, bakeries, gear shops, and even a small Himalayan Rescue Association clinic. The afternoon is free to explore the village, visit the monastery, and prepare for the challenging days ahead.

  1. Max. Elevation:3,540 m
  2. Duration:5-6 Hours
Day 08

Acclimatization Day in Manang (3,540m / 11,614ft)

A rest day in Manang is not just recommended — it is essential for safe altitude acclimatization before ascending to the high-altitude terrain of Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass. The golden rule of altitude trekking is "climb high, sleep low," so today you will take a short acclimatization hike to a higher elevation — typically to Ice Lake (4,600m) or the viewpoint above Manang — before returning to sleep at the same altitude. This helps your body produce more red blood cells and adapt to the reduced oxygen levels. The Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) runs free daily altitude sickness lectures in Manang that are highly recommended for all trekkers. The rest of the day can be spent relaxing, reading, enjoying local bakeries, or chatting with fellow trekkers from around the world.

  1. Max. Elevation:3,519 m
Day 09

Trek from Manang to Shreekharka (4,080m / 13,386ft) — 5 to 6 Hours

Leaving Manang behind, today's trail branches off from the main Annapurna Circuit route toward the side valley leading to Tilicho Lake. The path climbs steadily through rocky alpine terrain and open yak pastures, passing through Khangsar village before ascending to Shreekharka. This section of the trek is less travelled than the main circuit, giving it a more remote and wild character. Views of Tilicho Peak (7,134m) and Nilgiri North (7,061m) begin to reveal themselves as you gain altitude. Shreekharka (also called Siri Kharka) is a small settlement offering basic but comfortable tea house accommodation, serving as the base camp staging point for the visit to Tilicho Lake.

  1. Max. Elevation:4,080 m
  2. Duration:5-6 Hours
Day 10

Trek from Shreekharka to Tilicho Base Camp (4,920m / 16,142ft) — 7 to 8 Hours

Today is one of the most demanding days on the entire Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake, but also one of the most rewarding. The trail ascends steeply and relentlessly through high-altitude alpine terrain, crossing exposed ridgelines and narrow traverses with significant drop-offs to one side. The landscape becomes increasingly barren and lunar as you approach Tilicho Base Camp at 4,920m. Along the way, you pass beneath the immense south face of Tilicho Peak, with glaciers and snowfields visible at close range. The effort required today is considerable, and the thin air at this altitude makes every step count. Tilicho Base Camp's tea house is one of the highest in Nepal and offers basic accommodation — warm beds and hot meals are a welcome relief after this epic day.

  1. Max. Elevation:4,920 m
  2. Duration:7-8 Hours
Day 11

Early Morning Visit to Tilicho Lake (4,919m) and Trek Down to Shreekharka (4,080m) — 7 to 8 Hours

Rising before dawn, you make the final ascent to Tilicho Lake (4,919m / 16,138ft) — one of the highest lakes in the world and an unforgettable highlight of the Annapurna Circuit. Arriving at sunrise, the lake's deep turquoise waters shimmer in the early light, surrounded by a breathtaking amphitheatre of snowcapped peaks, glaciers, and moraine walls. Tilicho is considered sacred in Hindu mythology, and the atmosphere at the lakeside is one of profound stillness and awe. After spending time soaking in this extraordinary scene, you begin the long descent back to Shreekharka, retracing yesterday's route through changing landscapes. The descent, while long, offers ample time to reflect on one of the most spectacular natural sights in the Himalayas.

  1. Max. Elevation:4,919 m
  2. Duration:7-9 Hours
Day 12

Trek from Shreekharka to Yak Kharka (4,100m / 13,189ft) — 7 to 8 Hours

Rejoining the main Annapurna Circuit trail today, the route heads northeast from Shreekharka back through Manang and then continues beyond toward Yak Kharka. The trail climbs gradually through open, windswept terrain where yak herders graze their animals on sparse highland grasses. The views become increasingly dramatic as the high Himalayan peaks close in around you. Yak Kharka — which literally translates to "Yak Pasture" — is a small cluster of basic tea houses at 4,100m, offering little more than shelter, hot food, and magnificent mountain scenery. The night here is cold, and the stars at this altitude on a clear night are spectacular. Rest well — the most challenging day of the trek lies just two days ahead.

  1. Max. Elevation:4,100 m
  2. Duration:7-8 Hours
Day 13

Trek from Yak Kharka to Thorongphedi (4,450m / 14,599ft) — 3 to 4 Hours

Today is a shorter but important day, designed to allow further acclimatization before the big Thorong La Pass crossing tomorrow. The trail climbs steadily from Yak Kharka through rocky highland terrain to Thorongphedi — a name meaning "foot of Thorong" — which sits directly at the base of the pass. The surrounding mountain scenery is awe-inspiring, with massive glaciated walls hemming you in on all sides. Arriving early at Thorongphedi gives you time to rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear for the pre-dawn start required for tomorrow's pass crossing. An early dinner and a good night's sleep are essential here — most trekkers rise between 3:00am and 4:00am to begin the ascent.

  1. Max. Elevation:4,450 m
  2. Duration:3-4 Hours
  3. Distance:49km
Day 14

Trek to Muktinath (3,760m / 12,336ft) via Thorung La Pass (5,416m / 17,769ft) — 6 to 7 Hours

This is the defining day of the Annapurna Circuit Trek — the crossing of Thorung La Pass at 5,416m (17,769ft), one of the highest trekking passes in the world. Starting in darkness at around 4:00am, you begin the steep climb in the icy pre-dawn air, headlamps lighting the trail as you zigzag upward through a seemingly endless series of switchbacks. The final push to the pass is physically demanding, but as you crest the summit and are greeted by a sea of colourful prayer flags fluttering against an impossibly blue sky, every ounce of effort feels worthwhile. The panoramic views from the pass — encompassing Annapurna I, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, Khatung Kang, and beyond — are truly among the greatest mountain vistas on earth. After celebrating at the top, the long descent on the western side leads through increasingly barren Mustang-style terrain to the sacred town of Muktinath (3,760m), home to an ancient temple revered by both Hindus and Buddhists as a place of moksha (salvation). The day ends with an immense sense of personal achievement.

  1. Max. Elevation:5,416m
  2. Duration:7-9 Hours
Day 15

Drive from Muktinath to Pokhara — 8 to 9 Hours

The trek officially concludes today as you board a private jeep from Muktinath for the long drive down through the arid Mustang landscape to Jomsom, then onward through Tatopani and the winding Kali Gandaki Gorge road to Pokhara. The journey takes approximately 8 to 9 hours and passes through dramatically changing landscapes — from the high-altitude desert of Mustang to lush subtropical valleys. Arriving in Pokhara in the evening, you check in to the 4-star Temple Bell Boutique Hotel & Spa or similar property for two nights of well-deserved rest. A hot shower, a comfortable bed, and a lakeside meal await you in this beautiful mountain city.

  1. Max. Elevation:820 m
  2. Duration:8-9 Hours
  3. Distance:44km
Day 16

Rest Day in Pokhara — Evening Boating on Phewa Lake

After the physical demands of the past two weeks, a full rest day in Pokhara is both earned and necessary. Pokhara is one of Nepal's most beautiful cities — a lush lakeside town set against the dramatic backdrop of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhare mountain ranges. Spend the morning sleeping in, enjoying a leisurely breakfast, or treating yourself to a massage at the hotel spa. During the day, you might explore the vibrant Lakeside area, visit the International Mountain Museum, or simply relax by the pool. In the evening, take a gentle rowing boat out onto the serene waters of Phewa Lake, watching the sun set behind the Annapurna range as the sky turns golden — a peaceful and perfect conclusion to your trekking adventure.

  1. Max. Elevation:850 m
Day 17

Drive Pokhara to Kathmandu — 6 to 7 Hours

After breakfast, your private air-conditioned vehicle transfers you from Pokhara to Kathmandu along the Prithvi Highway, a scenic drive of approximately 6 to 7 hours through the hills and valleys of central Nepal. Arriving in Kathmandu by early evening, you check back into your hotel for a final night in Nepal's capital. The evening is free for last-minute souvenir shopping in Thamel, a farewell dinner at one of Kathmandu's many excellent restaurants, or simply a quiet evening reflecting on your extraordinary Himalayan adventure.

  1. Max. Elevation:1,400 m
  2. Duration:6-7 Hours
Day 18

Final Departure from Kathmandu

On your final day, a Nepal Adventure Holidays representative will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport in a private air-conditioned vehicle, timed according to your departure flight. As you leave Nepal behind, you carry with you memories of soaring mountain vistas, warm local hospitality, the triumph of Thorong La Pass, and the magical stillness of Tilicho Lake — an adventure that will inspire and sustain you for years to come. We hope to welcome you back to Nepal's mountains again soon.

Essential Information

Transportation for Annapurna Circuit Trek

Road Transfers Road transfers for Annapurna Circuit Trek have been facilitated with comfortable private transportation. The road transfer from Kathmandu to Besisahar by private jeep take approximately 6-7 hours following the Prithvi Highway, passing by the beautiful hill country and the Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers. Further on, you will be transferred by private jeep from Besisahar to Chame in 5-6 hours driving on difficult roads, hence the necessity of a strong jeep for this part.

Driving back from Muktinath to Pokhara takes 8-9 hours travelling along Mustang and Kali Gandaki corridors.

From Pokhara to Kathmandu you will be taking a private air-conditioned Hiace which takes about 6-7 hours. We can provide for optional helicopter transfers from Jomsom to Pokhara if you desire to shorten your travelling time. Please note that in the mountains, delays sometimes occur due to road conditions but we do our level best to ensure you travel on schedule.

Food During the Annapurna Circuit Trek

Annapurna Circuit Food What To Expect On The Circuit As the trek is popular, the food on the trail isn’t an issue and you can find a tea house pretty much every 2-3 hours. You’ll be surprised at the variety of options on the menus! They usually feature, among others: – Nepalese national dish Dal Bhat (rice and lentils served with vegetables), cheap and nourishing, generally served as much as you can eat in the tea houses. – Noodle soups, pasta, fried rice, momo (Tibetan dumplings), porridge, omelettes, pancakes and freshly baked bread.

Vegetarian and vegan options are easy to find all along the circuit and you won’t have a problem finding plant-based meals at every single one of the tea houses.

In higher altitudes, at locations like Thorongphedi and Tilicho Base Camp, the menus simplify slightly and the price gets a bit higher due to logistical challenges. Included meals on our trekking tour All your meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are included on the days you will be trekking. Drinking Water It is recommended to buy boiled or filtered water in the tea houses. To limit plastic consumption, you might consider using a water filtration bottle with the right technology to filter your own water, as a lot of trash accumulates along the trail and especially at the sites along the trail due to it all accumulating there.

Accommodation on the Annapurna Circuit Trek

Accommodation for the 12 trekking nights is in well-appointed, local tea houses. They are the workhorses of Nepalese trekking and consist of a family-run establishment that will provide basic twin or double rooms with a foam bed with blankets (or beds made from wooden planks). Sharing of bathrooms facilities is common up to a certain altitude and basic toilet and shower facilities are typically provided.

Rooms are larger and have better facilities lower down, e.g., in Chame and Pisang, whereas they are smaller and bathrooms are shared at the highest points, e.g., Shreekharka, Tilicho Base Camp and Thorongphedi.

However you can typically pay for a hot shower at the higher locations. At all tea houses there is a communal dining area where trekkers meet and warm up in the evenings. Accommodation in Kathmandu includes 3 nights at a 4 star Hotel (e.g. Mulberry) and accommodation in Pokhara includes 2 nights at a 4 star Hotel (e.g. Temple Bell Boutique Hotel & Spa).

Annapurna Circuit Trek Permits

Two mandatory trekking permits are required for the Annapurna Circuit Trek, both of which are included in the Nepal Adventure Holidays package price.

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): This permit grants entry into the Annapurna Conservation Area, managed by the National Trust for Nature Conservation. All revenue contributes directly to conservation and community development in the region.

  • TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System): The TIMS card is a safety registration system that records trekker details and emergency contacts. It is mandatory for all trekkers in designated trekking areas of Nepal.

  • Permit checking points are located at multiple points along the Annapurna Circuit route, including at Besisahar, Chame, Manang, and Muktinath.

Both permits can be obtained in Kathmandu (at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Pradarshani Marg) or at the ACAP checkpoint in Besisahar. Nepal Adventure Holidays arranges both permits on your behalf as part of the package inclusions.

Annapurna Circuit Trek Difficulty

The Annapurna Circuit trek falls in the moderate to challenging category and thus it’s ideal for a trekker with at least moderate level of physical ability and a little experience trekking. Walking for hours each day will typically last between 4-8 hours while total distances vary each day. On some days this may only be a few kilometers while the trek to Tilicho Lake, approach towards Thorongla Pass and finally crossing of the pass may include long hours and kilometers of trek.

The paths are also quite varying, as there are proper stoned-built roads from villages and hamlets down below.

The routes to some higher points may consist of rough stone, glaciers and even snowy terrain to reach close to the passes. Among the most difficult stages in Annapurna is crossing the 5416 meters Thorongla pass and on that particular day you’ll need to be at the best physical and mentally state as there is pre-dawn departure to complete this trek for 6-7 hours. However no technical skill is required except for some cardio exercises like long treks and runs, Staircase walks and jogs will do a lot better for your well-being during Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Acclimatization on the Annapurna Circuit Trek

Proper acclimatization is probably the most significant ingredient in ensuring that you have a safe and healthy trek while on the Annapurna Circuit Trek. We have included planned acclimatization stops to maximize the body's adaptation and have also taken into account factors that have a positive effect on acclimitisation. As the Annapurna Circuit gradually climbs from Besisahar (760m) to Chame (2,710m), Upper Pisang (3,300m) and to Ngawal (3,660m), your body has time to adjust.

On Day 8, we have included a crucial rest day in Manang (3,540m) - while in Manang, it is common practice to do a short excursion to an even higher point, such as Ice Lake (4,600m), and sleep at the same altitude.

Even the trek to Tilicho Lake will provide useful extra high altitude time that can further enhance acclimatisation.

Annapurna Circuit Trek Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness or AMS) is a genuine risk on the Annapurna Circuit Trek, particularly above 3,000m. Understanding the symptoms and prevention strategies is essential for every trekker.

Common Symptoms of AMS:

  • Persistent headache, especially on waking
  • Nausea and loss of appetite
  • Dizziness and lightheadedness
  • Fatigue and shortness of breath disproportionate to exertion
  • Disturbed sleep and vivid dreams
  • In severe cases: confusion, inability to walk in a straight line, and fluid in the lungs or brain (HACE/HAPE — medical emergencies)

Prevention Strategies:

  • Ascend gradually and never rush the itinerary
  • Follow the "climb high, sleep low" principle
  • Stay well hydrated — aim for 3 to 4 litres of water per day
  • Avoid alcohol and sleeping medications at altitude
  • Attend the free HRA altitude lecture in Manang
  • Consider carrying Diamox (acetazolamide) as a preventive medication — consult your doctor before departure
  • Listen to your body and communicate openly with your guide

If Symptoms Appear:

  • Do not ascend further until all symptoms resolve
  • Rest and increase fluid intake
  • If symptoms worsen or do not improve, descend immediately — even a few hundred metres can produce rapid relief
  • Your guide carries a basic first aid kit and will assist in arranging helicopter evacuation if required

Travel Insurance

This is non negotiable - comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory when trekking Annapurna Circuit. The Annapurna Circuit passes through incredibly remote regions, at extreme altitudes of up to 5416 meters (Thorong La Pass). If you become seriously ill from altitude, or get injured, it may be necessary for an emergency helicopter to rescue you from this part of the mountainside.

A helicopter rescue out of the Annapurna region would normally cost somewhere in the range of 3000-8000 USD+; an expense that the trekker would have to cover personally.

Therefore your policy needs to ensure that it covers trekking at high altitude, in excess of 5000 metres. We also suggest that your policy includes trip cancellation, curtailment, personal accident cover, personal liability, loss or theft of personal possessions, and, most importantly, helicopter rescue/evacuation (even in remote locations). Confirm with us that your policy covers trekking up to the maximum altitude of your trek – which is 5416 metres (Thorong La Pass). We can suggest reliable insurers upon request.

Annapurna Circuit Trek FAQs

How difficult is the Annapurna Circuit Trek?

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is rated moderate to challenging. The daily walking time ranges from 4 to 8 hours, and the terrain varies from stone-paved village paths to high-altitude rocky trails and glacial moraines. The most demanding day is the Thorong La Pass crossing (5,416m), which requires a pre-dawn start and sustained effort. Good physical fitness, proper acclimatization, and a positive attitude are the keys to success.

What is the best time for the Annapurna Circuit Trek?

The best seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Autumn offers the most stable weather, clear skies, and excellent mountain visibility. Spring brings beautiful rhododendron blooms and warmer temperatures. Summer is dominated by monsoon rains (June–August), and winter (December–February) brings extreme cold and potential snow closure of Thorong La Pass.

Is WiFi available along the Annapurna Circuit?

WiFi is available in most tea houses along the circuit from Besisahar to Manang and in Muktinath, though the connection speed is slow and not always reliable. Access typically requires payment of a small fee. Above Manang and in the more remote Tilicho Lake area, WiFi availability becomes very limited. We recommend purchasing a local Nepali SIM card (Ncell is recommended) for basic internet connectivity.

Are there charging facilities along the route?

Most tea houses along the Annapurna Circuit provide electricity and charging points, though they may charge a small fee per device. At very high elevations such as Tilicho Base Camp and Thorongphedi, electricity may be limited or unreliable. We strongly recommend carrying a large-capacity power bank (20,000mAh or more) to ensure your devices remain charged throughout the trek.

What is the risk of altitude sickness at 5,416m?

Altitude sickness is a real risk on the Annapurna Circuit, particularly above 3,500m. Our itinerary incorporates planned acclimatization days and a gradual ascent profile to minimize this risk. Common symptoms include headache, nausea, and fatigue. Your guide is trained to recognize these signs and will recommend rest, descent, or medical attention as appropriate. Carrying Diamox (prescribed by a doctor) is advisable as a preventive measure.

Is a guide mandatory on the Annapurna Circuit?

As of recent regulations, solo trekking without a licensed guide is no longer permitted in many areas of Nepal, including the Annapurna Conservation Area. Nepal Adventure Holidays provides experienced, English-speaking trekking guides who are essential not only for navigation and safety but for cultural interpretation and emergency response. All our guides are government-licensed and trained in first aid and high-altitude medicine.

How much does the Annapurna Circuit Trek cost?

The total cost depends on the package selected, the number of trekkers, additional optional services (such as helicopter return), and personal spending. Nepal Adventure Holidays offers competitive pricing that includes all major inclusions — accommodation, meals during trekking, permits, guides, and transfers. Please contact our team for a detailed and personalised cost breakdown tailored to your group size and requirements.

Can I trek the Annapurna Circuit solo?

Solo trekking without a registered guide is no longer permitted under Nepal's updated trekking regulations. Even independent trekkers must hire a licensed guide for the Annapurna Conservation Area. We recommend booking a complete guided package with Nepal Adventure Holidays to ensure full regulatory compliance, safety, and the richest possible trekking experience.

Is a helicopter return available from the Annapurna Circuit?

Yes, helicopter transfers are available as an optional upgrade, most commonly between Jomsom (near Muktinath) and Pokhara. This is a popular option for trekkers who wish to save time or who find the long return drive uncomfortable. Helicopter rescues from higher elevations such as Thorong La Base Camp or Manang are also possible in emergencies, subject to weather conditions and require valid travel insurance coverage.

What trekking permits are required for the Annapurna Circuit?

Two permits are required: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System). Both are included in the Nepal Adventure Holidays package price and will be arranged on your behalf before the trek begins.

What is the accommodation and food quality like on the trail?

Tea house accommodation along the Annapurna Circuit is clean and comfortable, with improvements in facilities made in recent years. Rooms are typically simple twin-share with foam mattresses and warm blankets. Food quality and menu variety are excellent from Besisahar to Manang; menus become simpler at higher elevations. Dal bhat, noodles, pasta, momo, pizza, and Western breakfast items are widely available.

How fit do I need to be for the Annapurna Circuit Trek?

You do not need to be an elite athlete, but you should be able to walk 5 to 8 hours per day on uneven terrain, sometimes in cold weather. Regular hiking, stair climbing, and cardiovascular training for 8 to 12 weeks before departure is strongly recommended. A positive mental attitude and the willingness to take it slow are equally important.

Is there a difference between the Annapurna Circuit Trek and the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

Yes — the two treks are significantly different in character. The Annapurna Circuit Trek (18 days in this package) is a long-distance route that circumnavigates the entire Annapurna Massif, crossing the Thorong La Pass and including the Tilicho Lake extension. It covers much more ground, greater cultural diversity, and higher elevations. The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a shorter, more focused route that leads directly into the Annapurna Sanctuary, reaching ABC at 4,130m, and is generally completed in 10 to 12 days. Both are spectacular — the right choice depends on your time, fitness, and adventure goals.

What happens if Thorong La Pass is closed due to snow?

In rare cases, extreme snowfall can temporarily close Thorong La Pass. Your guide will monitor weather conditions closely and advise accordingly. In such cases, our team will explore alternative plans, which may include waiting 1–2 days for conditions to improve or arranging a jeep bypass via the Besisahar–Jomsom road if the situation warrants it. This is why we always recommend trekking with a licensed guide who knows the mountain conditions intimately.

What is the best trekking route — clockwise or anticlockwise?

The traditional and most popular direction is anticlockwise — starting from Besisahar and crossing Thorong La from east to west (arriving at Muktinath). This direction offers a more gradual ascent to the pass, which is important for acclimatization. The Nepal Adventure Holidays itinerary follows this proven anticlockwise direction for maximum safety and enjoyment.

    A Full Day of Exploration

This tour covers a lot in one day, so be prepared for some walking! The guide was patient and answered all our questions. The only minor issue was the midday heat, but the company provided water, which helped. Overall, a great way to see Kathmandu’s UNESCO treasures in a short time.
