Trip Overview

Mohare Danda and Poon Hill Trek

One of the most rewarding and most easily accessible short treks in Annapurna is this Mohare Danda & Poon Hill trek, an ideal choice for those seeking sensational mountain vistas without undertaking a long expedition to high altitudes. Over the course of 8 days you will traverse authentic Gurung & Magar villages, terraced fields and dense rhododendron forests to reach two spectacular vantage points that boast the best views in the Annapurna range. This trek is graded easy to moderate and is popular among first-time trekkers, families or those simply seeking a compact Himalayan adventure led by Nepal Adventure Holidays’ experienced team of locals.

How long and high is the Mohare Danda and Poon Hill Trek? The trek covers approximately 40-45 km of terrain over 4 days, the highest point being 3,323m/10,902ft at Mohare Danda. From the moment you leave Kathmandu, which includes a short flight to Pokhara, and drive to Banthanti the trekking begins – first to Mohare Danda, crossing Poon Hill, and finally descending through Ghorepani, Tadapani & Ghandruk. The round route allows you to enjoy the scenery without excessive days of difficult hiking, and each day’s trek will last 5-7 hours in duration, taking you to some of the finest viewpoints in the foothills.

Immerse yourself in culture and nature The trek will allow you to experience the ancient Gurung & Magar culture first-hand, trekking through remote stone and timber settlements adorned with colourful prayer flags, Mani walls and terraced hillsides. You will venture into the heart of Annapurna Conservation Area, where you can witness the varied forest life and listen to an abundance of birdsong. Undoubtedly, the highlight of this trekking journey will be the breathtaking views from two distinct locations. Mohare Danda will offer you solitude and uninterrupted panoramic views and the legendary Poon Hill will provide you with a surreal 360° sunrise view over Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Machapuchare (Fishtail Mountain), and Hiunchuli.

The best seasons for this trek are in the spring (March to May) and the autumn (September to November). During this period, the skies are most likely to be clear, allowing for magnificent views and you will have the opportunity to see the rhododendrons in full bloom during spring or turning golden hues in the autumn.

Weather conditions in spring and autumn are pleasant, and with day time temperatures ranging from mildly cool to warm and evenings quite cold.

Since this trek never rises above 3,323m / 10,902ft and involves gradual ascents and descents it can be considered moderate. As this trek is considered moderate and safe even for older trekkers and families with children aged 12 years and over, there is no age limit, however basic fitness levels are required. Let Nepal Adventure Holidays guide you on a sensational Mohare Danda and Poon Hill Trek.

Essential Information

Transportation for Mohare Danda and Poon Hill Trek

Travel to and from the trek trailhead consists of domestic flights and private road transfers. Usually, there's a 25-30-minute scenic domestic flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara. However, you can also choose the longer overland journey by private car or bus if you want to enjoy the journey through the country or if flights get delayed (around 6-7 hours).

From Pokhara, there's a private transfer from to Banthanti (approx. 3 hours) via bumpy village roads which weave through the hills.

On the return trip, there's a transfer from Ghandruk back to Pokhara (approx. 2 hours). Flights to Pokhara can be delayed during the monsoon season or if visibility is poor, so be sure to add an extra day to your itinerary if your international departure is close. For the ultimate in convenience, and especially if you are short on time, helicopter transfers can sometimes be booked as a supplement between Pokhara and nearby trek routes.

Food During the Mohare Danda and Poon Hill Trek

All food along the trek will be at tea houses, generally based on a standard trekking menu, consisting of the perennialNepali dal bhat (rice, lentils, and curry), noodlesoup, fried rice, momos, pasta, and simpler fare such as porridge, eggs, toast, and pancakes for breakfast. Because the altitude is moderate and the trail is along established villages, food options will generally be a bit more diverse than on high or extended trekking adventures. Vegetarians and vegans shouldn’t worry as much either – there are ample choices and most tea house can tweak dishes if asked.

At the tea houses along the way, you can purchase drinking water that is boiled, filtered, or bottled.

Boiled and filtered water are preferred over bottled water due to environmental concerns and costs. We highly recommend you pack water purifying tablets and/or a filter for an added bit of security.
