Trip Overview
Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek
Journey Through Remote Annapurna Trails on the Khopra Danda & Khayer Lake Trek One of the most serene but visually striking trails in Annapurna, the Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek presents an incredible mix of off-beat trekking paths, thrilling ridge walks and a sacred alpine lake sitting just below the peaks. Far removed from the crowds found on the Annapurna Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit trails, this trek is for trekkers who yearn for a truly local feel with breathtaking Himalayan views. We spend 12 days (from arrival in Kathmandu to departure) combining some of the more moderate to challenging treks with cultural interactions using a teahouse-based trekking style that makes your trek comfortable while authentic.
What the Trek Entails The entire itinerary consists of some 10 days of walking with total walking distances ranging from 90 – 100km, depending on side trips or any changes we make to the standard itinerary.
The highest point reached during the trek is Khayer Lake at 4827m, and we stay one night at Khopra Danda at 4020m. From Pokhara we drive to Nayapul and make our way into the hills and further up towards Ghandruk and subsequently on a circular path that includes Ghorepani and Poon Hill before we descend back into Birethanti and eventually Pokhara. This includes exploring villages such as Ghandruk and staying in high grazing pastures and then ascending to the very impressive Khayer Lake. Culture and Views During the trek, we’ll explore traditional Gurung villages such as Ghandruk (part of ACAP, renowned for its stone roads and traditional housing), Dobato, Tadapani and beyond to high altitude grazing pastures of Khopra Danda.
An exhilarating and relatively strenuous side excursion leads up to Khayer Lake which is sacred to both Hindu and Buddhist communities.
Along this trail we’re blessed with close-up, up-close views of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Hiunchuli and of course, the iconic Fishtail or Machapuchare Mountain. A classic highlight of the trek is the unforgettable sunrise viewed from Poon Hill. The Annapurna region’s most tranquil but rewarding trekking experience awaits!
Best Time for the Trek The Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek is ideally undertaken in the months of March to May (Spring) and September to November (Autumn). These periods are characterised by the clearest skies and pleasant temperatures at high altitudes, making for optimal trekking conditions. Spring provides wonderful wildflower displays with the Rhododendrons on the lower trails in full bloom, while Autumn ensures a clarity in the views that few other seasons can match.
Moderate to Challenging Due to the steep climbs and altitude gain, the trek can be classified as moderate to challenging.
Trekkers who have some experience in trekking and a moderate level of fitness will have a much easier and more enjoyable time, although the trek is still very much accessible to reasonably fit beginners. Booking this trip with us gives you a hassle-free, secure, and lifetime enriching experience.

Essential Information
Transportation for Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek
The Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake trek requires both road transport and an optional flight. The trip can be commenced by a standard tourist bus service running along the Prithvi Highway from Kathmandu to Pokhara. The duration is around 6-7 hours and this trip is perfect for anyone who wishes to see the country side in a much economical and pleasant way. In contrast, for travelers who have limited time, a short 25 minute domestic flight connects both these cities in the least time possible.
The trip to Nayapul, where trekking starts, can be undertaken in a private Jeep/Bus, and this usually takes 4-5 hours.
The same road trip can be used for your return back to Pokhara from Birethanti, which marks the conclusion of the trekking trip. You should be mindful that domestic flights between Kathmandu and Pokhara sometimes get cancelled or delayed due to weather, particularly during the monsoons and in winter so consider adding a spare day to build up some cushion. Additionally, if the client is time strapped or wishes for a scenic travel return, there are options of helicopter charters from Pokhara to sections of the Annapurna range but those need to be booked for the trail head.
Food During the Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek
You’ll find hearty, high-calorie food in teahouses to keep you going on long days trekking. This mostly revolves around the classic dal bhat (a mix of lentil soup, rice, vegetable curry, and pickles) and most places offer unlimited refills, which is why this became the standard fare among big-mileage trekkers. Most menus will also feature various types of noodle soup, fried rice, momos (dumplings), pasta dishes and simple breakfast items like porridge, eggs, pancakes and Tibetan bread.
Most travelers will be fine ordering vegetarian or vegan dishes, as lentil-based meals with vegetables and rice are common in many establishments, but check ingredients carefully at higher, remote teahouses.
Water is usually served as boiled, filtered or bottled – it is a good idea to use filtration system/tablets, as it’s cheaper and more environmentally friendly than bottled water.
Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek Accommodation
Lodges in the Trek you stay in the Local tea houses are simple, local, family run lodges with modest twin or double bedrooms (sometimes en suite at lower altitudes) at a cheaper level but basic sleeping at altitude with a shared long-drop toilet. When at higher altitudes, like Khopra Danda, rooms are very basic, there are squat or Western style toilets and very little heating except in the common dining room in the evening.
There may be hot showers available at a price and an electricity supply for charging electronics may be available at a charge on higher lodges. Despite the relative sparseness, tea houses along the way offer a cosy and homely experience every evening.
Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek Permits
Two main permits are required to legally trek in this region, and our team arranges both prior to departure.
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) – required for entry into the Annapurna Conservation Area, checked at entry points along the trail
Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Card – used to register and track trekkers for safety purposes
Permit checkpoints are located at key entry points such as Nayapul and Ghandruk, where documents are verified
Both permits can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara through a licensed trekking agency
Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek Difficulty
The Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake trek is considered moderate to difficult mostly because of the consistent altitude gains, several days of longer treks, and the demanding uphill trek to and from Khayer Lake. Trekking typically involves 5 to 7 hours of trekking per day (on a couple of days 8 to 9 hours are required) and on surfaces such as rock steps, jungle paths, exposed ridgelines, rocky terrain, and semi-glacial paths at the higher reaches of the trek.
This requires nothing more than excellent fitness and basic prior trekking experience, although previous multi-day high altitude experience would significantly ease the couple of days betweenDobato, Khopra Danda, and Khayer Lake.
Acclimatization on the Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek
Proper acclimatization needs to be done at this route since the altitude between Tadapani and Khayer lake has increased very rapidly. So this itinerary focuses on gradual ascent with overnight halt at Dobato and Khopra Danda for acclimatization.
It’s always a good idea to trek at a slow pace, drink plenty of fluids and avoid alcoholic drinks during trek, also keep in contact with your guide at all times to inform any physical discomfort or AMS symptoms.
Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek Altitude Sickness

Common symptoms include:
Headache and dizziness
Nausea or loss of appetite
Fatigue beyond normal trekking tiredness
Shortness of breath and disturbed sleep
Prevention strategies:
Ascend gradually and follow the itinerary's built-in acclimatization days
Drink at least 3 to 4 liters of water daily
Avoid alcohol and smoking during the trek
