Itinerary of Helambu Trek - 6 days
Day 01
Kathmandu to Sundarijal (Drive) to Chisapani – 2,300m/7,545ft – 4 Hours
Your Helambu Trek begins with a short drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal, the starting point of the trek on the northern edge of the Kathmandu Valley. From here, the trail climbs into Shivapuri National Park, passing through forested terrain rich with birdlife, before reaching Chisapani after approximately 4 hours of walking. Chisapani offers early views over the surrounding hills and serves as a comfortable first overnight stop for the trek.
Max. Elevation:2,300m
Duration:4-5 Hours
Day 02
Chisapani to Kutumsang – 2,446m/8,024ft – 7 Hours
This is one of the longer trekking days of the itinerary, following a ridgeline trail through Tamang villages and forested terrain toward Kutumsang. Covering approximately 7 hours, the trail offers intermittent views of the surrounding hills and valleys as it winds through a mix of farmland and forest. Kutumsang is a small Tamang settlement that provides a peaceful overnight stop before the climb toward Thadepati.

Day 03
Kutumsang to Thadepati – 3,650m/11,975ft – 6 Hours
The trail continues climbing steadily from Kutumsang toward Thadepati, the highest point of the entire trek. Essential Information
Transportation for Helambu Trek
All access and descent to and from the region is road based and, in my opinion at least, one of the easiest treks to organize as far as logistics are concerned. A drive to and from Sundarijal outside Kathmandu begins the trekking day and Melamchi Bazaar outside the region returns you to Kathmandu after a 3 hour drive.
This trek can be undertaken all year round as it’s not reliant on domestic flights which can sometimes be subject to weather delays. Road conditions can sometimes suffer from monsoon rain, outside the trekking seasons.
Food During the Helambu Trek
Along the trekking path there are several lodges and tea houses serving the usual dishes available on trekking such as Nepalese Dal Bhat, noodle soup, fried rice and basic breakfast foods including porridges, eggs, and toast. The trek involves travelling through both Tamang communities and also Sherpa/Hyolmo communities so local cuisines are found in some of the villages which are a nice alternative to the usual dishes. There are a lot of vegetarian options available as Dal Bhat and vegetable items form the main diet for trekkers.
For drinks, you can get boiled, filtered or bottled water from most lodges (filtered water recommended to be the better and more economical alternative to bottled water, and for environment as well).
Drinks and snacks available on the walking path are extra.
Helambu Trek Accommodation
5 nights' accommodation during the trekking portion are on local lodges providing basic and comfortable accommodation, often with shared toilet facilities along the route. Given the trek passes through a range of sized villages, from tiny ones such as Kutumsang to slightly larger ones such as Tarke Ghyang the level of trekking lodge does vary slightly but are of the same type of standard you would expect for teahouse trekking in Nepal’s mid hills.
Helambu Trek Permits
Trekking in this region requires a permit for the protected area at the start of the route, which is included in the Nepal Adventure Holidays package.
Shivapuri National Park permit, required for entry at the start of the trek near Sundarijal
Permit checkpoints are located at the park entrance near the trailhead
Permits are arranged in advance through Nepal Adventure Holidays' office in Kathmandu
Helambu Trek Difficulty
The trek is a ‘Moderate’ trek involving 6 trekking days between 3-7 hrs per day on a terrain of forest paths, ridgelines and stone stairs in both Shivapuri National Park and along the remote villages of Helambu region, with the highest point being 3,650m. (at Thadepati) This is an elevation profile which consists of a number of ascents and descents rather than an initial one single high climb.
Therefore a good level of physical fitness is advised. The trekking however is manageable for almost any reasonably active traveler, even a first timer.
Acclimatization on the Helambu Trek
Since the maximum altitude of the trek at 3,650 meters, that is attained just for a moment on Day 3 (Thadepati) and then again drops down, we can do without separate rest days for acclimatization that are mandatory in high-altitude Himalayan trekking regions.
With a rather ups and downs profile in its six days of walking, this trek also helps you naturally acclimatize by having continuous up and down movement in elevation, but you should walk at a slow and steady pace, especially in Days 2 & 3 which involve relatively longer walking distances, and stay hydrated at all times.
Helambu Trek Altitude Sickness
While the risk of altitude sickness on this trek is lower than on higher Himalayan routes, some awareness is still worthwhile given the altitude reached at Thadepati.
Symptoms:
Headache and dizziness
Nausea or loss of appetite
Fatigue beyond normal exertion
Shortness of breath during mild activity
Prevention strategies:
Maintain a steady pace, particularly on the longer ascent days
Stay well hydrated throughout the trek
Avoid alcohol and heavy meals at higher elevations
Get adequate rest each night
Immediate actions if symptoms appear:
Inform your guide immediately
Rest and avoid further ascent until symptoms improve
Descend to a lower elevation if symptoms worsen
Seek medical attention if symptoms are severe or persistent

Preparation and Safety for Helambu Trek
As a fairly straightforward hike, preparations for a Helambu trek don’t need to be complicated. Just walking or taking on a few stairs for a couple of weeks prior to the start of the hike will prepare your body for the extended days of walking, especially Day 2 and 3 where there are several days of ascent and descent. It also good practice walking over uneven and sloping terrain with a weighted day pack to ready you for the undulating trail.
Having an experienced guide and porter (both included in this tour) is crucial for safety, providing on-hand support as well as insightful guidance on the culture and people in the villages you’ll pass through, with Tamang, Sherpa and Hyolmo being the prominent communities of the region.
The climate in Helambu is fairly pleasant, however rain showers and cooler temperatures are common in the higher points of the trek, like Thadepati.
Key preparation and safety points:
Build basic cardio and endurance fitness 4–6 weeks before the trek
Practice hiking on hills or stairs with a loaded pack
Trek with an experienced guide and porter for safety and support
Stay updated on weather conditions, especially during shoulder seasons
Carry essential first-aid and altitude sickness medication
Follow your guide's advice on pacing during the longer trekking days
Travel Insurance for Helambu Trek
Comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended for this trek, it is not included in your price. The maximum altitude reached on this trek is not that high compared to many of the other trekking trails in the Himalaya.
It is, however prudent to consider a policy that at least covers trekking to an altitude of up to 4000m, with provision for air evacuation, for example, a helicopter evacuation should a most unusual health emergency or accident occur. Always check the details of your policy or select one which specializes in adventure trekking holidays.
The Helambu trek makes a good argument for how much culture and mountain scenery can be fit into a short trek near Kathmandu. This loop itinerary through Shivapuri National Park follows ridgelines and passes a diverse selection of Tamang, Sherpa and Hyolmo villages in just six days without the hassle of domestic flights or going high.
A good choice for a beginner trekker, families interested in an introduction to the Himalayas, or anyone with limited time seeking an easily accessible Himalayan experience, the Helambu Trek is an ideal blend of rural life and mountain landscapes. This tour covers a lot in one day, so be prepared for some walking! The guide was patient and answered all our questions. The only minor issue was the midday heat, but the company provided water, which helped. Overall, a great way to see Kathmandu’s UNESCO treasures in a short time.
